TPM’s Cryogenic Tank Guard Draws First Place in the Pump & Valve Category
TPM’s customer was originally fabricating this part as a weldment, resulting in geometric variation and aesthetic non- conformities. Though willing to live with these issues, the real problems arose when put in the operational environment, where component failure was common. As it turns out, when the cryogenic tanks are filled, small amounts of freezing gas vapor are released from the tank’s vent. Over time, the frozen vapor would cause the welds on the fabrication to crack, resulting in a high frequency of replacement. The customer went on to produce the guard from a hog out. This approach worked well but component manufacture costs were prohibitive. Working with customer, TPM designed and produced a one-piece casting that retained all required features and performed as well as the hog out with significantly lower production costs. TPM surpassed customer expectations by providing part traceability and by incorporating the part number and the customer’s logo into the casting as an integral marking. The resulting product met all operational requirements, performing as well as the hog out, while offering the customer a 60% savings in component production costs.

BIMAC Precision Castings Takes Dairy & Food Processing Award with Cheese Shredder
In an initiative to reduce inventory and storage costs, a food processing equipment manufacturer approached BIMAC, a nearby domestic supplier, to aid in the design of a cheese shredding machine for restaurant use. A key component, the cheese shredding wheel, which was originally conceptualized as a welded fabrication, but this approach to component manufacture was not cost effective.
Additionally, the
fabricated component made equipment assembly as well as maintenance cumbersome. Through concurrent engineering and the use of rapid prototyping techniques, BIMAC and their customer were successful at reducing developmental lead times, resulting in a reliable, low-cost component that met all requirements for machine assembly and operational maintenance.
By
achieving these factors, the customer was well positioned to introduce the machine at a national tradeshow, launching into the high growth fast food market.
