15th World Conference on Investment Casting WINNERS

Artcast Inc. Takes First Place in Fine Art Category with Joshua Glover Monument

Unlike most artists, Quentin VerCetty does most of his

sculpting work in the digital realm. To bring his vision into the physical world from the digital, an art foundry with relationships in the world of additive manufacturing was required. ICI member Artcast Inc was well positioned to address VerCetty’s needs. Working with its supply base, Artcast produced a series

of patterns. The artist was called in to inspect the patterns before casting, affording him the opportunity to add features to the bust in the physical realm rather than the digital world. Once satisfied with his additions, VerCetty released the foundry to cast the piece in C87300 alloy. After assembling and finishing the sculpture, Artcast applied a fine patina which seemingly brought the sculpture to life, thus completing the transformation from digital concept to life like presence. The resulting bust of Joshua Glover, a run-away slave who

arrived in Canada via the Underground Railroad in 1854, now presides over the park that, thanks to the Etobicoke Historical Society, bears his name. The piece highlights Glover’s transformation from slavery to freedom and his commitment to self-improvement and education, which ultimately led to his being characterized as a charismatic Victorian gentleman.

Aristo-Cast Scores First Place Aerospace Award with PICS By utilizing PICS (Printed

Investment technology, Casting Shell) Aristo-Cast successfully combined multiple

weldments into a single piece Fuel Injection Triple Swirler. This component, which redirects the flow of fuel and air, atomizes the fuel into small droplets for more efficient combustion in an aerospace jet turbine engine. The component measures 0.750 inches diameter by 0.305 inches in depth, and is cast in 17- 4PH Stainless Steel.

Due to part complexity, and the small vane and gas path

sizes, conventional dipping was not an option, and the cost of printing the part in metal was not effective. So, an Admaflex 300 was used to print the shell for this product, which was sintered and run through the investment casting process. The resulting product provided the customer with a cost- effective solution with high quality results.
