PROFILE West Star Aviation will be celebrating its 15th

anniversary February 2017. So what does Haycraft attribute the success of the company to? The hard work of him and his business partners? The fi nancial backing they had? Sure, those things played a key role, but Haycraft is quick to point out the true reason for their success. “The success of our company is totally due to our customers and our employees,” Haycraft tells D.O.M. magazine. “We could have never done it without our employees and our customers. Some companies only focus on the bottom line and make decisions based on that. Financial management is a must – we are always looking for ways to be more effi cient. But our focus from day one was to deliver quality work, on-time and at a fair price and focus on customer service.

“Our employees are a huge asset to our company,”

Haycraft continues. “Almost all of the employees who worked at Premier stayed with us. When we bought the Grand Junction facility in 2005, the same thing happened. I’m proud of our success. There’s no one person I could attribute our success to. It’s our entire team of employees, business partners and investors! Our investors trusted us as

a management team to make this company successful. They believed in who we were. Sure we made some mistakes and had our challenges, but they trusted us to do our jobs. They gave us the backing we needed to be successful. Likewise, We have the same attitude with our employees. Sometimes the hardest part of transitioning control is take your hand off the throttle and let the employees run with it and make their own decisions, but it’s something required of a good manager. It is imperative to support and guide them at the same time. When I look back at all of the mentors I had over the years, that’s what they did. Sometimes the decisions an employee makes isn’t necessarily the one I might have made, but they need to be allowed to make those decisions in order to grow.” Although Haycraft is no longer actively involved with

new hires, we asked him what he looked for in employees who were looking to join the West Star team. “We want people who are passionate and not afraid of work,” he says. “With our culture of customer service, we need teamwork and employee buy-in. We are looking for family members not just numbers. As we continue to grow, it is imperative on our success that we focus on customer service and engaged, happy employees.”

DREAM ON! We asked Haycraft what advice he would give someone for a successful career in aircraft maintenance. “I tell people to follow their dreams and never quit dreaming,” he says. “That’s what I did. I had a vision and a dream and I followed it. There are chances you take, and sometimes things aren’t comfortable and don’t always turn out. If you are passionate about what you do, it will show. Pay attention to your peers and supervisors and learn from them. Never stop learning, and always look for new opportunities. My motto is, ‘Pay attention to detail in all you do!’ The choices we make dictate the future we lead. Your word is your integrity!” We asked Haycraft if he ever dreamed that he would

have been instrumental in co-founding an aircraft maintenance business that would grow to the 800+ employee company it is today. “Never in my wildest dreams! I can honestly say I’ve lived the American dream. Looking back, it’s been a great ride! I’m thankful to God, his son JC, my family and the entire aviation community that made this ride possible. We are only just getting started. Strap in and hold on!
