was right about everything — it was cold, dark and noisy. I turned on the area light switch but only got modest lighting. I could see that most the illumination was going to come from my double C cell mag light. I shined the light around the large cavern of ducts and tubes. I noticed there were several valves like the one I was looking for, so I started to match them up to the pictures I had. Trying to hold a fl ashlight in one hand and trying to read a rolled-up picture became almost impossible. I recalled that I could rub the papers against the corner of something and that might take the roll up factor out of them. That trick worked, and I continued on with my quest to fi nd the suspect valve. Within a few minutes I had the hunt down to just two valves. I thought that maybe I should just do the procedure maintenance control wanted me to do on both valves, therefore surely addressing the repair. I quickly ruled that out because I didn’t know what the other valve controlled and disturbing a working part sometimes makes it not work. I didn’t want to make this problem worse. Then I noticed that there was a tag with numbers attached to the cannon plugs for the valves. On one of the faxes I remember seeing a number. I rifl ed through my faxes to the page with the number, but much to my disappointment I discovered that when I rubbed the papers earlier to get the roll out, I had completely erased the number. I felt my only recourse was to call maintenance control and get that number. It was way too noisy to call maintenance control from there, and I didn’t have the number anyway, so through the cabin I went to fi nd a landline. With the number in hand, and a quick glance at 12C, I returned to the work area. I was excited to see the number matched one of the two valves. My excitement was quickly dashed as the next hurdle appeared. Airplanes are

subject to a lot of vibrations. Because of that, many forms of securing connectors from coming loose are commonplace. The cannon plug on this valve was safety wired in position. The problem was I didn’t have my wire cutters or more safety wire with

me — I had thrown them on the front seat of the van from my last job and they weren’t in my tool bag. This required another walk through the cabin to get my needed equipment. As I walked back through the cabin, I sensed the passengers were becoming
