or hybrid as well. Newer cruise and cargo ships are also cleaning up their act as well, utilizing more efficient electrical propulsion systems. While maritime has a smaller

share of the world travel market, it should be noted that, according to

the United Nations, approximately 90% of world trade is transported via water. While it is difficult to provide any type of useful comparisons between aviation and maritime, each is estimated to be responsible for roughly comparable figures of ~2%

global greenhouse gas emissions, with aviation having a ~22% share and maritime having ~17% by 2050, according to a report from Europe entitled ‘Emission Reduction Targets for Aviation and Shipping’ in 2015. Some of these estimates are slightly different than from other sources, but since each does not completely disclose the exact subsectors included (specifically, are figures for aviation including only commercial transport, or are business / general aviation included, jet turbine aircraft only, etc.), which can explain some of the differences in percentages of emissions. Another critical point worth from

this report worth mentioning is that both aviation and maritime shipping produce short-lived emissions of NOx and SO2, which lead to cloud formation, the impacts of which are estimated to be two to five times higher than CO2 emissions from aviation alone. The report identifies that NOx and SO2 emissions have an indirect warming and (a much smaller) cooling effect on global warming as they produce or destroy GHGs (mainly ozone, methane and sulphate aerosols). It mentions that alternative fuels are partial solution but will not completely solve either industry’s emissions issues. AVIATION HAS HAD GREAT

PROGRESS IN RECENT YEARS The question is not should we minimize or even stop most air travel, as some of the boycotts happening as of late are striving for, but, what more can this industry do to address these issues.
