We reviewed the operations and maintenance manuals (Rolls-Royce and Bell) for assembly specifi cs in conjunction with the company’s QC check sheet to insure we didn’t miss a step. As expected, these steps were/are specifi c to the particular job, but the central theme of this company’s system is a visual, logical progression of the job that is applied to any maintenance event. And as a bonus, if you are pulled away from a job, having signed off each task as you completed it, when you come back you will know exactly where you stopped and thus can resume your work with confi dence that you have not missed a vital step or inspection. And even better, this process also provides the same safe guards even if someone takes over the job for you.


Finally, as a bonus, along with a system to keep you from resorting to maintenance by memory, working in this manner will provide the deserved respect from both your peers as well as the pilots. Their confi dence and trust in you and your work will be obvious. So, as the end of this discussion is

Mike Broderick has been an A&P Technician since 1971. During his career he has worked as a shop and hangar technician;


fi eld tech and customer support rep, and owner of a Part 145 engine overhaul facility. He was also the VP of Business Development at H.E.R.O.S. Inc., which is a Part 145 repair station for the Rolls-Royce 250 engine, and a Honeywell fuel system overhaul agency. His specifi c experience is in turbo-shaft engines in light to medium helicopters. The one he is most familiar with is the Rolls-Royce (formally Allison) 250 series engines. Mike is currently employed at TRACE Worldwide Corp., as its business development specialist.
