DATA IS PRICELESS For the most part, the majority of Internet-based companies have their valuations completely based upon the value the market prescribes for the data they gather, analyze and utilize to provide some sort of service we fi nd useful. Where would Google be without gathering all of our searching or
browsing activities, or Facebook without knowing all of your likes, dislikes, wants, desires, which cat videos you enjoy and in some cases, everything you do? This brings me to addressing the title of this article. As two key examples of this, Boeing buying AerData and GE buying AirVault, illustrate why big metal-bending companies see value in owning companies that handle key aviation records information. Not to bore anyone with obvious information that most readers of an aviation magazine would know, but hardware OEMs recognize revenue primarily when aircraft, engines or spare parts are sold (although they are all trying to expand further into aftermarket activities). managing aircraft records is attractive, but, the larger end game is what they can learn from such data over time. The aircraft OEMs have always wanted more data from airlines and operators, and are able to acquire for the most part in diff ering ways, but, via online platforms such as AirVault, this makes this task may potentially be so much easier. provide digital aircraft records management providers with a snapshot of their entire aircraft operation in a concise format. Once the ATA and IATA and other industry groups are better able to standardize on data formats for all types of processes, the value of the digital aircraft records companies will grow due to their ability to process it, and do something more useful with it, ala Google and Facebook. No more data ‘trapped’ in static formats such as PDF (which requires much work to actually scrape the contents off of, and creates issues for software trying to extract from such fi les) or image fi les. These are just ‘electronic paper’ and not truly digitized. The OEMs apparently see this, and some of them are taking action publicly with such buyouts. But how long before you have a Google or an Amazon move into the aircraft records management business? Or one of the large fi nancial institutions, due to their growing skillset with blockchain-secured data handling? I would not be surprised to see one of the large Internet companies, or some of the smarter fi nancial companies either team with or buy into the aviation data market. In fact, the aviation industry could benefi t from having a data specialist company swoop in and fi nd a way to better manage the ever-expanding reams of data being generated. Can you imagine how Google may be able to package the resulting data analysis which it would sell back to
