TOP: A.G. Spalding & Bros. Aviation Equipment answered this question with, “SPALDING ANWERS “YES”, IF THE PILOT USES IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE.“ Hatfield added: “An important item in a pilot’s equipment [for 1929] was a comfortable helmet. Appearance was also a factor for barnstorming as an oil spotted helmet did not inspire confidence in the prospective passenger [in an open cockpit airplane.”
Bottom Right: The Roberts Motor Co. of Sandusky, OH, powered this Benoist biplane flown by Anthony Jannus, shown here with Capt. Berry making a parachute jump above Kinloch Park in St. Louis in 1912. Hatfield added, “The parachute was stowed in the cone-shaped device and was pulled out by the weight of the jumper as he bailed out.”
I never met Hatfi eld and I know little about him. But for many years I have reached for his books to help me illustrate an article on American aviation history and have often sent him a silent “thank you.” Northrop University shut its doors in 1993. The
“Hatfi eld Collection” was acquired in 1995 by the Seattle Museum of Flight in the state of Washington. It is not yet digitized and catalogued. My tribute to Hatfi eld is long overdue. From hundreds
of advertisements I have selected a few that represent a range of aircraft, engines, aviation-related equipment and services.
