SAFETY
the potential hazard. Being distracted while working is another common problem. Finally, another issue leading to problems is a change in process, or working on a different aircraft or in a different location.”
“You need to make sure the use of these systems cannot be bypassed,” Leduc says. He recommends a three- pronged policy that covers the use fall protection systems, training in their use, and enforcement of their use.
Recurrent, positive training
increases awareness, helps workers understand preventive measures and teaches them how to use the equipment, reports Leduc. Training should cover topics like common places for falls to occur, common injuries due to falls and how to treat them, how to avoid falls, how to use fall restraint and fall arrest systems, and what to do when a fall occurs. “There is a lot of quality safety equipment and standards already in place. But the human factor must be considered, and it’s a huge task for managers to reinforce proper safety procedures. They need to be out on the floor, looking around for people being safe and unsafe, pointing it out, and not punishing,” he says. According to Cooper, ANSI
standard Z359.2-2007 provides information and best practices regarding training for fall protection equipment. In addition, he recommends reviewing safety training policy and conducting refresher training annually. “Training needs to be revised any time there is a change in the process or a change in the safety equipment being used,” he says. “There needs to be continuous improvement on the training.” Finally, Cooper advises training
workers on the fall protection equipment in their own environment. He says many times operations send technicians to train on this equipment off site, and that is not the same as being trained on the equipment at their workplace. “Every location where aircraft maintenance is being conducted is unique,” he says. “Training in that unique environment is critical.”
