The Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, with restaurant by Akira Back, has recently opened its doors to much fanfare, soon to be joined by the Mandarin Oriental Bankside in 2028. The Caterer asks why the international hotel group has such faith in the capital

n the space of four years, Mandarin Orien- tal Hotel Group will be launching two hotels in London, such is the confidence the Hong
Kong-based company has in the capital’s luxury hotel sector. The 50-bedroom Mandarin Oriental May-
fair, which incorporates 77 residences, opened its doors to guests on 3 June and in doing so has joined what has been the grande dame of Knightsbridge hotels since 1999: the 189-bedroom Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park. Meanwhile, construction is underway on the South Bank, where the 171-bedroom Manda- rin Oriental Bankside will open between Tate Modern and Blackfriars station in 2028. It is the first time that Mandarin Oriental has more than two hotels in any one city. Hong Kong, where the Landmark is situated nearby the group’s mothership, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, is the only other location with more than one property.
