Variety Cruises passengers help in fight against plastic

When Variety Cruises captain Antoniou Leontios decided to devote a few hours a week to clearing plastic bottles off beaches in Indonesia during his weekly voyages through the islands, he had no idea passengers would be keen to join him. It is now a popular alternative (and free) excursion, with a T-shirt awarded to all those who take part.

Fred Olsen to repeat canal feat

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines is to repeat its spellbinding transit of the Corinth Canal in Greece for a third time in 2022. Braemar squeezed through the waterway with barely inches to spare last September (pictured) and will repeat the feat in April this year, and again in September 2022, on a 25-night no-fly voyage from Southampton. Other itineraries in the 2021-22 programme include a voyage from Liverpool on Black Watch in April 2022 that links the Azores and Iceland, where marine conservation experts will help passengers spot whales and dolphins. In August, Boudicca is going in search of the midnight sun and glaciers on an epic 28-night cruise from Dover to Norway, Spitsbergen, Iceland and Greenland.

Virgin Voyages is venturing to the Med in summer 2021 as new ship, Valiant Lady, will be based in Barcelona. It will call into favourite hotspots in France, Italy and Spain on one-week cruises, each with an overnight stay in Ibiza.

CroisiEurope ramps up agent support and fam trip places

CroisiEurope is stepping up its agent support in the UK as it expands its river cruise programme to include the Nile in Egypt and the Ganges in India, and moves into ocean cruising with La Belle des Oceans, a former Silversea ship that will be navigating the St Lawrence River in Canada this summer. Initiatives include launching an online training programme, almost doubling annual fam places to 150, and increasing its visibility at trade shows.
