ANTHEM OF THE SEAS Royal Caribbean International

SUNDAY, MAY 22

The lowdown: The second of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, Anthem of the Seas has been sailing since 2015. Last summer, the ship embarked on a string of domestic itineraries focused on UK ports, but it’s now back to its international sailings. This year, Anthem will visit Canada and the Mediterranean, out of Southampton, and the Caribbean, from New York.

Facilities: Like Royal Caribbean’s other Quantum-class ships, which the line says are all about “redefining at-sea adventures”, Anthem is awash with fun activities. Indoor activity space SeaPlex – the largest of its kind on a cruise ship – features bumper cars, a basketball court, X-Box gaming stations and a roller-skating rink. Outside, the viewing deck holds a Guinness World Record for the highest viewing deck on a cruise ship, affording panoramic views 300ft above the waves. As well as a choice of pools, for kids there’s a water park, themed parties, baby and toddler playgroups, and an Exploration station with science experiments, arts and crafts and dance parties (with ice cream).

Restaurants and bars: There are 19 restaurants, including a Jamie’s Italian and American fast-food chain Johnny Rockets. Izumi serves sushi and Japanese izakaya-style small plates. There’s experimental molecular cuisine at Wonderland, while for five-course dinners paired with wine there’s the Chef’s Table. Those with a sweet tooth can head for the French patisserie. Nightlife venues include Vintages wine bar and buzzy nightspot Two70 Bar.

Cabins: There are a total of 2,090 cabins including 140 Royal Class suites. Room types include interior, ocean-view,

balcony and “virtual balcony” (which is a real-time, floor-to-ceiling digital view), while suite options include balcony, virtual balcony, outside and family connected.

Key selling points: The sheer wealth of activities should keep anyone entertained while at sea. Thrillseekers can suit up for RipCord by iFly, a sky-diving simulator, or test the waves on surf simulator FlowRider, while scrapbooking, jewellery-making sessions, game shows and art auctions provide more-sedate options. Also expect guest entertainers, from dancers to comedians, plus bands and orchestra performances, and big-name musical We Will Rock You. Sailings from New York visit Bermuda, St Kitts and private island CocoCay in the Bahamas, where clients will find white sand, private beach cabanas, North America’s tallest waterslide and a helium balloon that can take them 450 feet up. Prices start from £515 for a departure on December 4, 2022.
