The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Cook: ‘MPs were incompetent’
Story: Transport secretary defends government over Thomas Cook collapse The fact that Thomas Cook Airlines was rescued in all other countries except the UK speaks volumes about the incompetency of Grant Shapps and Andrea Leadsom. It was the only profitable part. We are in an era of the most useless politicians this country has ever seen. Ian Cameron
Margins: Better to make something than nothing?
Comment: Is it better to turn bookings away and maintain margins, or package using a T-Atol and get something rather than nothing? Sharon Louise Wade: That’s the big question. I would say not, but when I worked at a large store in the centre of a city with targets to achieve, we had to on the busiest days. Working for the same company in a more affluent area, there was more time and bigger margins, so I would never have to. There are too many factors to give a yes or no answer.
Cook: ‘CEOs failed company’
Story: Thomas Cook collapse ‘not my fault’ – Manny Fontenla-Novoa What neither of them [Fontenla-Novoa and Harriet Green] address is the failure of the business to recognise the bricks-and-clicks model they should have followed. Not just digital. Not just more stores. But a model whereby the online world feeds the offline and vice versa. Paul Bondsfield
Cook: Fontenla-Novoa’s error was to merge with Airtours
Story: Thomas Cook collapse ‘not my fault’ – Manny Fontenla-Novoa Lauren Hammans: I’ve always had a lot of respect for Manny and was given some amazing opportunities at Cook. However, working there during the [2007] merger I was gutted we’d bought such a dreadful brand. I couldn’t confidently sell Airtours as the product wasn’t up to scratch. Martine Delaney: Oh Manny, we loved you and we were so loyal, but you shouldn’t have taken on Airtours. You sold us down the river.
