DESTINATIONS FLORIDA | THE US

The park’s newest rollercoaster TRON Lightcycle/Run sets Lauren McCarthy’s heart racing

“Users, prepare to be digitised into the world of Tron,” says the computerised voice. Cue a striking reveal of the Sync Chamber where I board my Lightcycle and prepare for the thrill ride of my life. Excitement mounts as I’m “synced” to the vehicle via an Identity Disk in the back restraint, and I steel my nerves before being sent hurtling through eight ‘energy gates’, as a member of Team Blue into a dark, digital world. I am at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to ride the new TRON Lightcycle/Run. With speeds of close to 60mph, it’s one of the fastest coasters in a Disney park, up there with TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland, and is definitely one for thrill seekers like me. As I approached the attraction I could hear the TRON: Legacy-inspired music, written by composer Joseph Trapanese specifically for the ride, which heightened the sense of drama and urgency the closer I got to the queue entrance. “Initiate in 3…2…1…” My eyes water as I go

from zero to just under 60mph in a few seconds, and a tear slides down my face from the speed of the rollercoaster. Joyous and terrified at the same time, I let out a scream, but am quickly distracted from how fast I’m going by the hexagon lights following the ride around the canopy, and the presence of the opposing Team Orange racers, indicated by bright blue lights occasionally turning to orange and the music changing to a more villainous tune. Twisting and turning, I’m suddenly through more ‘energy gates’ and my Lightcycle overtakes Team Orange, wiping them out and making Team Blue victorious. Five more goes – in the interests of research, of course – taught me that for the biggest thrill, visitors should head for the front of the ride. Fans of the movies TRON and TRON: Legacy should sit towards the back to fully experience the light features and ride storyline. Whatever your preference, everyone should try TRON Lightcycle/Run after dark, when riding under the gleaming canopy, filled with thousands of bright lights, is absolutely awesome.
