Thank you for your support selling holidays to Portugal!

Christmas in Portugal is a magical time and while we share many traditions with Britain, we do a few things a little differently…

w Instead of hanging stockings for Santa, we leave a shoe out for baby Jesus to fill with gifts.

w Our Christmas Dinner – on December 24 – is our national salted cod dish, bacalhau. Instead of mince pies and Christmas cake, we feast on rabanadas – toasted bread bathed in sweet syrup – and Bolo Rei or King’s Cake, a ring-shaped bake decorated with dried fruit to resemble a crown. Traditionally, it contains one broad bean – whoever finds it has to buy the cake next year! Or you can get lucky and find the hidden gift.

w If you or your clients are looking to get away at Christmas, Cabeça, a village in mainland Portugal’s highest mountain range, will host the country’s first sustainable Christmas village with a range of eco- friendly gifts. For mainstream purchases, visit Porto, one of our best shopping cities.

w The quaint village of Óbidos is a special place to celebrate Christmas. This walled village becomes a living nativity scene with its narrow streets, houses and shops decorated with Christmas motifs.

w In Madeira, celebrations go on until the new year. Funchal’s streets are illuminated with festive lights, and its large market and street entertainments make it a lively spot to celebrate. Stay for the new year celebrations and see one of the world’s most spectacular firework displays.

Enjoy your Christmas, and best wishes for 2019!
