‘Munro refused to step back after Barrhead sale’

Te founder and former boss of Barrhead Travel thought he was “indispensable” and refused to take a step back aſter the agency was sold to Travel Leaders Group (TLG), an employment tribunal has heard. TLG chief executive Ninan

Chacko told the tribunal in Glasgow that Munro had been “unable or unwilling” to accept he was no longer in charge of the company he had created. Although Munro had received

£9 million as his personal share of the sale price, and a new management team was in place, Chacko said: “Bill was Barrhead and that was never going to change in his mind.” Despite repeated writen and

verbal agreements that he would take on a new role at TLG, which bought Barrhead in 2018, he continued to turn up at its offices, contact suppliers and try to instruct staff, Chacko said. Munro has taken the group to

a tribunal claiming he was unfairly dismissed from the role of chairman of Barrhead, which he retained aſter the sale. Chacko said the position was

effectively redundant aſter Barrhead

Barrhead Travel and inset, Bill Munro

became just one part of the larger company. However, he said the wider problem was Munro’s belief that the company could not function without him. Chacko said the role envisaged for Munro – one agreed to by him – was an ambassadorial one, using his contacts and experience to find new prospects for Travel Leaders. “His view was ‘I’m crucial,

indispensable. I’m the ideas person – I need to stay involved’,” Chacko said. Munro said Travel Leaders had never at any point instructed him

not to do what he was doing and the company was not making it possible to do what was asked of him. Te group offered him a new

contract three months aſter the sale, which he refused to sign. Munro said: “I was keen to

work with TLG to make Barrhead a larger, stronger business and put forward suggestions. Tey promised me that role.” Te tribunal’s writen decision is

due to be made in about four weeks. OReporting by Te Herald

Jet2holidays wins ‘landmark’ fake claims appeal

Jet2holidays has won a “landmark” court appeal that allows it to issue contempt of court proceedings against holidaymakers who withdraw dubious claims of being sick while on holiday. Te Court of Appeal ruled

in favour of the operator, which will now press ahead with legal action against a couple from Notingham who pulled out of their sickness claim before formal legal proceedings had been launched. Karl and Laura Hughes had

brought a gastric illness claim against Jet2holidays. Te claim was pulled aſter they were shown social media posts and footage of a snorkelling trip during their holiday in Lanzarote in 2016 – when they claimed they were ill. Judge Robert Owen QC

originally ruled that the High Court had no jurisdiction to deal with the commital proceedings, but Jet2holidays appealed that decision and the Court of Appeal ruled unanimously that the High Court did have jurisdiction to commit for contempt of court. Jet2holidays says the ruling

“paves the way for companies to take action against dishonest claimants, even if they do not actually submit legal proceedings”.
