Story: Air France budget arm Joon faces closure I wonder how much that has cost Air France? They should have known better. There is a list of similar failures, including Ted (United), Little Red (Virgin Atlantic) and Go (British Airways). What does the future hold for Level (IAG)? ROHAN ALCE

China’s new visa rules are a real pain

Story: Wendy Wu Tours issues alert over new Chinese visa rules This is a real pain. We are visiting China and Tibet this year and, living in Cornwall, we will now have to travel to the Chinese consulate in London to have our fingerprints taken to get our visas. Flying is the only viable option to get to London, as we have limited time and do not want to stay overnight. It means having to fly to London, travel across the city, then back to the airport, then back to Cornwall. Is China trying to destroy its foreign tourist trade from overseas? GARIN

TWEETS THIS WEEK

Flashback to fax back

Comment: Another eventful year ahead Speaking of archives and blasts from the Travel Weekly past, I recently came across an old Travel Weekly article from my Hertz days where we launched an agents’ training scheme via ‘fax back’. Oh, how times have changed! SHEELAGH MAHONEY

Emma Savage @TCEmmaSavage (Travel Counsellors) What a busy day. I’ve not stopped. Lots of enquiries ongoing and bookings to be made.

Murray Harrold @hurrymurray (business travel agent) I do like Virgin Atlantic’s innovative helpdesk. You call a “phone number” and a “person that knows what they are talking about” answers it.

Reuben’s Retreat @ReubensRetreat Proud to be one of @travelweekly’s 5 chosen charities. “Let us be kind and compassionate to remove the sadness of the world.”

QUOTE OF THE

WEEK

“The main high streets are not as busy these days so I thought let’s take the business to the community

instead of them having to come to us.”

Virgin’s Flybe rescue raises questions

Story: Virgin Atlantic consortium swoops to rescue Flybe Good news for Flybe – and a steal for Virgin Atlantic. But, talking professionally, I’d advise against rebranding it as Virgin Atlantic. Flybe operates, for the most part, from small, ‘community’ airports. For those who use it, it is a familiar, local brand. No matter how cuddly and public-friendly Virgin Atlantic sees itself, I’m not sure its values will readily translate to the core Flybe audience. PAUL BONDSFIELD

What about the poor shareholders of Flybe not involved in this deal? Surely a better option than giving away their company would have been some sort of share issue. In effect, the business has been given away for a further £20 million of debt and a promise of future funding. And unless they change the business model, it’s likely to be another failure down the line. Virgin has a very poor record when it comes to short-haul flying. Virgin Sun and Little Red failed, so why will this be any different? PETER SANITY Travel Weekly welcomes a response from Virgin Atlantic
