Theresa May’s decision to scrap the £65 ‘Settled Status’ fee for EU citizens is a welcome move for the hospitality sector, but the industry as a whole still needs to speak up and speak louder if it is to hold on to the talent and experience of EU workers. In Scotland, hospitality and

tourism is dynamic, capable and critical to the economy. ONS data shows visits and spending by overseas tourists in Scotland rose to record levels last year and most organisations believe there can be even greater growth. However, that optimism is being crushed by Brexit. One in four businesses expects to lose staff, with 65% anticipating further staffing problems. Tourism must remain high on the government’s agenda. Accessing the right talent and diversity of thought and experience is key for success.

Hospitality sector must voice its staffing fears

Edinburgh’s tourism tax is poorly conceived

Story: Edinburgh tourism tax threatens ‘more pressure’ What a short-sighted measure. The proposed tax will exacerbate the price differential between the tax-paying hotel economy and the tax-avoiding ‘sharing economy’. Poorly designed taxes like this have the opposite effect to the one intended, undermining the tax base which funds public infrastructure.

“Brexit concerns are filtering into the results. We saw a decline of 10%-14% in December and when we look

forward we see a decline across the board.”

Cook review could trigger break-up

Story: Thomas Cook will ‘consider all options’ in group airline review Selling the airline would be the beginning of the break-up of Thomas Cook, as Thomas Cook Holidays would not be as competitive if buying third-party seats. Cook has expanded to be an uncontrollable monster, swallowing up companies it doesn’t need and losing sight of its core bucket-and-spade market. Like Tui, Cook is suffering from the rise of Jet2holidays, and a shift by customers

back to independent travel agents for choice, value and other tour operators. Cook recently reviewed and increased its online discounts on a wide range of

its product, effectively cutting out independent and third-party agents from being able to sell a wide range of product. Agents can be harsh and many immediately stopped promoting and selling the whole Cook range. Perhaps those at its HQ have forgotten how third-party

agents rallied round a few years ago, when Cook’s share price dropped to 9p and it was threatened with bankruptcy. RICHARD SLATER proprietor, Henbury Travel, Macclesfield, Cheshire Travel Weekly welcomes a response from Thomas Cook
