The goalposts for recovery keep moving A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Complexity, added costs and uncertainty – the trade could do without more of these right now. The introduction of pre-departure testing for international travellers is

understood and has been broadly welcomed, but the cost implications and its implementation alongside quarantine raises fears that the goalposts for resuming travel have once again been moved further away (page 5). With pressure growing from the impending deadline for issuing refund

credit notes, the demands of merchant acquirers and customers seeking chargebacks, not to mention the March Atol renewals and start of business loan repayments, agents and operators are feeling the squeeze from all sides and need more clarity and support (page 4). Of course, complexity and uncertainty aren’t always entirely the

enemies of agents and specialist suppliers who should be the first port of call for customers looking to navigate the new travel landscape. But as experts on our Travel Weekly webcasts this week made clear, the ongoing restrictions and lack of a clear exit plan continue to suppress demand. Despite the unrelenting pressures, the response to our upcoming virtual Globe Travel Rewards event on Thursday, January 21, shows the industry is desperate for some positivity and the chance to celebrate the relationships which make it special (page 10). Next year, we’ll be back in person and in true spectacular style for the Globe Travel Awards. In the meantime, I would urge you all to sign up for free by 5pm on Friday for the chance to hear from some fantastic trade supporters, win some amazing prizes and give your spirits a much-needed lift.
