RN FRANCE

Beyond the cities of Northern France, life slows down in the department of Aisne,Aisne, a bucolic idyll for outdoor activities that has charmed scores of painters and writers. As Aisne was the heart of France’s first kingdom, its towns have retained the soul of yesteryear with a rich legacy of architectural gems. In fact, Aisne is the fourth department in France in terms of the number of listed buildings. There are also farming and cooking traditions to discover, plus a peaceful network of footpaths, canals, parks and gardens.

jewels in Northern France’s crown, the country’s second-largest theme park after Disneyland Paris and bursting with rollicking rollercoasters and river raft rides. And all travellers, whether nine or 90, are dumbstruck by Nausicaa,

ausicaa, Europe’s largest aquarium in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Dedicated to the discovery and protection of the marine world, its cutting-edge innovations allow for a closer-than-close oceanic experience, with more than 58,000 animals on display. Watch stingrays swoop overhead and shoals of fish glimmer in the blue light – it’s enough to make anyone want to be a diver.

Boulogne has plenty of appeal, the highlight being its spectacular Opal Coast with its chalk cliffs, perfect dunes of sand and chic resorts such as Le Touquet. The headlands of Blanc-Nez and Gris-Nez offer spectacular views across to Kent on a clear day. The department saw some of the fiercest fighting in both world wars and there are numerous Remembrance memorials and monuments. And there’s a cultural draw thanks to the Louvre-Lens, a satellite of the Louvre which features masterpieces from the Paris museum.
