Japan’s island paradise

Three hours by plane from Tokyo lies the subtropical prefecture of Okinawa. Home to a distinctive culture, dozens of endemic species of wildlife and some of the clearest waters in the world, Okinawa is unique. This undiscovered paradise is made up of 160 islands, located in the East China Sea midway between Japan’s main islands and Taiwan.

Its lush forests, underground limestone caves and traditional villages are just some of the things that make this archipelago so special. Okinawa’s history dates back centuries and some of its heritage sites can still be seen today; it’s also said to be the birthplace of karate.

Okinawa boasts an enviable climate. Temperatures range from an average low of 19C in winter to a high of 31C in summer. It’s also rated as one of only five Blue Zones in the world due to its residents’ healthy way of living and long life expectancy – meaning it offers all the ingredients your customers need if they are looking to feel refreshed and revitalised on holiday.

The prefecture is very easy to get to. Travellers from the UK can fly direct from Heathrow to Tokyo Haneda with ANA, Japan Airlines and British Airways. Cathay Pacific also flies

from London to Tokyo via Hong Kong, and Finnair operates several flights a week to Tokyo via Helsinki. There are a number of daily onward connections from Tokyo to airports across Okinawa, including Naha, Miyako and Ishigaki. It’s easy to travel across the archipelago, with ferries and air links connecting the main island with its smaller neighbours.
