Net zero: Pace of change to go green divides opinion Comment: The travel industry is wrong to embrace net zero (by Ken Scott)
Interesting points, Ken, but I don’t see what your suggestions are for making travel sustainable? We can’t carry on as we are. People will stop travelling due to the negative effect it has on the environment. The industry needs to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. These tough targets are absolutely necessary. Organisations want to purchase from sustainable suppliers, so any company that doesn’t aim for net zero and invest in new technologies will simply cease to exist. Sally Higgs
Deben Travel @DebenTravel A much improved few days of sales but let’s not get carried away with a ‘bookings explosion’. Agents are still facing a crisis. We cannot make up for two years of heavy losses just by removing a few tests, albeit it’s a good step forward.
I fully agree with Ken. A demand for ‘net zero now!’ actually stymies transition to a cleaner energy future, as well as being disastrous for economies. Innovation and transition require growth and prosperity – new tech does not just appear because we desire it. As a geographer, I have noted a disregard for economic wellbeing in this debate. We should champion the industry and its growth, and champion the technology that over not too long a time will fundamentally alter the reliance on fossil fuels. Jim Butcher
