Survey of travel intentions of 3,000 holiday-going consumers reveals significant propor

ne in three UK holidaymakers has not changed their travel plans for the

next 12 months, according to a major piece of consumer research conducted in September. The survey on behalf of travel

PR and marketing agency Lotus suggests struggling businesses can be confident of a return in demand for next spring and summer if Covid restrictions permit. The research among 3,000 UK

adults who travelled in the previous two years, published as a UK Travel Intelligence Report last week, did find substantial concern about Covid. More than one in four respondents (29%) said they would not travel abroad before there is a vaccine. The same proportion (29%) said

they would travel abroad less often than previously, and 10% would travel in another way or choose a different type of holiday. However, 32% said their holiday

plans would not change. Two-thirds (66%) said they

would not be swayed by holiday offers, rising to 77% for those aged

50-plus, suggesting cut-price deals could fail to attract many takers. Just 8% said they would definitely be swayed by a good deal, with an additional 26% open to a good offer and young adults aged 18-34 most likely to snap up a bargain. One-quarter of respondents

(24%) said they were more likely to travel domestically than before, due to Covid. More than a third (36%) were

less likely to travel to ‘neighbouring countries’ or to take a cruise, and approaching half were less likely to travel elsewhere in Europe (44%) or beyond (48%). However, 50% were at least as likely to travel to a neighbouring country in the next two years as before. One in five respondents (22%) reported being less likely to book an

they would be more likely to book insurance against a cancellation or illness when travelling. Lotus chief executive Jules Ugo

Two in three luxury travellers ‘will wait for a Covid vaccine or travel less’

Almost three out of five respondents in the survey (59%) said they would opt for a sun and beach holiday and one in three (35%) would visit a city. But in the luxury market, half the

respondents (53%) rated nature and outdoor experiences ‘very important’. Travellers in the luxury market were

more likely to change their plans due to Covid. Just 23% said they would not change plans. Almost one-third (30%)

said they would not travel abroad before there is a vaccine and almost two in five (37%) said they would travel less. So two-thirds of luxury travellers

appear likely to wait for a vaccine or travel less. An additional 10% said they would travel in a different way from before. The poll of 3,000 UK consumers aged

18-75 who had travelled within the past two years was conducted in September.
