SPAA honours suppliers for handling of pandemic

SPAA AWARDS 2020 Rewards

Z Large tour operator: Jet2holidays

Z Small tour operator: Classic Collection Holidays

Awards presenters Joanne Dooey and Peter Martin

Ben Ireland

The Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association replaced its traditional awards night this year with a celebration of suppliers’ handling of the pandemic. In a virtual Rewards and Awards

event, recognition was given to companies and individuals who had helped SPAA members to repatriate stranded travellers, move holidays to later dates and pay out on cancellations and refunds “in a timely manner”. Light-hearted awards were also

handed out to those who had cheered the association in the midst of the crisis, from dressing up on Zoom to DIY projects while in lockdown. Ex-footballer Peter Martin, who co-hosted the awards with SPAA

president Joanne Dooey, said: “It’s been a tough year and everyone in the travel industry knows this. I have been looking on and wondering how you will get through this but you’re battlers, not only the individuals but the collective travel industry.” Dooey said: “This year we’ve

decided to throw all the usual categories overboard and instead reward those companies, suppliers and people who have helped to support us through the ups and downs of the last six months.” Dooey also paid tribute to the

“many sales executives and reps out there who are sadly no longer in the travel business” having lost jobs as a

result of the pandemic. iWatch the event at: bit.ly/SPAA2020awards

Welsh agencies optimistic after firebreak closures

Travel agencies in Wales are optimistic about trading after reopening following a 17-day ‘firebreak’ lockdown. Stores reported strong demand

on their first day back trading on Monday. Matthew Sutton, owner of two-branch agency Travel With Matthew, said: “It’s lovely to be back open and to see customers coming in who are happy to make bookings. We were hoping it would be this busy but we didn’t expect it.” Suzanne Cumpston, sales and

commercial manager at Cowbridge- based Sam Smith Travel, said a group booking to the Maldives, worth £20,000, was confirmed on the first day back open. She added: “We’re busy but working hard to create that; it’s certainly not just landing in our laps. I also expect footfall to increase within the next few weeks quite dramatically.” Miles Morgan Travel owner

Miles Morgan said he expected business to return to pre-lockdown levels after opening his three stores in Wales. Tui reopened its 14 branches in Wales.
