Buffet waste offers food for thought A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR


The conversation around sustainability in travel unsurprisingly often focuses on the headline issues such as carbon emissions, water and plastic use, and animal welfare. But like so many areas where change is sought, it is often the small things that help to make a big difference to the overall picture. As we report in this week’s Responsible Travel themed edition, food waste from the much-loved hotel or cruise ship buffet is one area where travel firms can make a significant difference, with Tui once again leading the way with its efforts to reduce waste and ensure its food is responsibly sourced across its portfolio (pages 4 and 12). And with research from YouGov showing a growing willingness on the part of consumers to adjust their lifestyle to help the environment,


these sort of efforts will increasingly become a factor in customers’ holiday choices. Next week, I will be moderating the third Association of Touring & Adventure Suppliers


Conference in Manchester, and I know that sustainability will be a hot topic for our panellists, speakers and throughout the immersive trade fair. I can’t wait to hear more from the supplier members, and also from the many agents who are embracing this rapidly expanding sector. And given the growing importance of the sector to our readers, it is fitting that it has been chosen alongside cruise to showcase a bright new look and content for Travel Weekly’s themed supplements this week and next.
