O Thomas Cook sought a legal ruling on money held by agents for clients’ holidays which had not taken place when Court Line failed. The company had not refunded any money to clients but had £400,000 held in a special

fund, pending a ruling. O The possibility of a merger of airline giants Pan American and TWA was rumoured to be on the cards in the longer term, although it

was understood no talks had yet been held. O UK agents were told to expect a warning from the Greek Cypriot government that they were contravening international law by doing business with hotels in Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus. This followed reports of the Turks trying to organise their own tourism in the north of the island by taking over Greek-Cypriot-owned hotels.

O Thomas Cook was set to expand its leisure business considerably after selling its US operations and its UK travel management arm to American Express. Cook had 380 agencies, but did not plan to grow as large as Lunn

Poly, which had 720 shops. O Airtours announced it was opening an overseas office and giving senior directors more responsibility. Paul Evans, George Marcall, David Burns, Ton Waslander, Anita McErlean and Chris Mottershead all took on new or expanded roles while Richard Carrick took on agent sales. Meanwhile, First Choice research and development

manager Peter Vella defected to Lunn Poly. O Agents failing to pay operators on time faced being fined by Abta, while operators also faced fines for delays in issuing tickets to agents.

O Abta’s bid to improve consumer protection for bed bank bookings provoked opposition within its own ranks amid fears members would jump ship to rival associations such as the Travel Trust Association. Agents which relied on bed bank sales questioned Abta’s plan to force its member bed banks to take responsibility for

clients’ money if an agent failed. O Thomas Cook cut its flight-only agent commission through viewdata from 1% to 0.1% to compete with

low-cost airlines. In the same issue, Travel Weekly spoke to Cook boss Manny Fontenla-Novoa as 44% of the company’s shares were put on the London Stock Exchange, and out of its German parent Arcandor’s hands. Despite the change in ownership,

2009

it was reported staff would barely notice the change. O Meanwhile, Universal Orlando Resort revealed details of its latest ride, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Fans could look forward to exploring Hogwarts Express, Zonko’s Joke Shop, Ollivander’s wand shop and The Owlery.
