The best of your letters, comments and social media this week New agents: System needed

This year, I’ve seen many new travel agents opening up without experience or qualifications. The industry is allowing untrained individuals with a passion for travel to become agents overnight. They are advertising their services on social media without advising the public that they have no experience, no qualifications or are still on a training scheme.

I have no issue with people joining the industry and

understand there will always be competition. But there should be a system in place that forces new agents to stipulate they are new and/or in training so clients can make an informed choice, and, so there is some differentiation between those of us who have done this for years and those who are new. I have worked in travel for 25 years and pride myself on the experience I have, which cannot be acquired overnight. Angela Perkins, Designer Travel

Iain Shaw: A true gent Your Stories: Congrats to Barrhead Travel’s Iain Shaw who is retiring after an amazing 50 years in travel! Patricia Sharpe: Congratulations Iain, I loved working with you. You are a true gentleman. Good luck in your well-deserved retirement.

Brexit: Please, no election

Comment: Will Boris Johnson’s parliamentary shutdown lead to Brexit clarity at last? The last thing the industry needs is another general election as history tells us that bookings simply dry up. However, it seems that is where we are heading. Our local MP, a member of the current cabinet, hasn’t been in touch for two years and yet yesterday a four-page leaflet arrived showing us all the wonderful things she has been doing: improving trains (not according to the number of Delay Repay claims I have had to make) and saving the environment. It is clear an election is about to be announced, so although we kept thinking things couldn’t get worse, it looks as though they can and will. Alan Bowen

Phil Bloomfield @philbloomers Comment: Can Prince Harry help travel forge a sustainable future? Prince Harry spearheads Travalyst sustainable travel initiative. This is a well-balanced summary of the challenges Travalyst (and by extension, the industry itself) faces in owning its responsibility to the planet. I hope Harry’s initiative delivers something tangible, and it’s not more lip-service.
