SPOTLIGHT SEND ME TO SYDNEY
SANDRA CHIPCHASE
CHIEF EXECUTIVE, DESTINATION NSW
Travel Weekly has teamed up with Destination NSW and Qantas on the incredible Send Me To Sydney campaign. We spoke to Destination NSW chief executive Sandra Chipchase
Q. Tell us what’s happening in Sydney and New South Wales? A. There’s always something new and exciting happening in New South Wales! New hotels, events, restaurants, product – it’s all go here! Exciting infrastructure developments in Sydney include the transformation of Darling Harbour and Barangaroo with expanded public space, luxury hotels, dining precincts and boutique shopping. New luxury hotel Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour offers 590 rooms and The W Sydney will open in 2020 as part of The Ribbon development. We are proud to be known as Australia’s events capital. Highlights include the Invictus Games in October, L’Etape Australia (November 30-December 1), Sydney New Year’s Eve, and in 2019 the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in February and March and West Side Story Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour in March and April. Of course, a visit to Sydney isn’t complete without experiencing Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas (May–June).
Q. The Send Me To Sydney campaign is all about premium product. Do you think people know about the range of premium experiences on offer in NSW? A. Incredible accommodation and
experiences can be found across New South Wales from celebrity-favourite Byron Bay on the North Coast and exclusive Lord Howe Island to the remote luxury accommodation of the Blue Mountains and the style and glamour of Sydney. We recommend agents sign up to the Aussie Specialist Program, which offers a New South Wales module and an Australian Luxury module.
Q. If a travel agent asked you to recommend a single ‘dream NSW moment’ to showcase premium NSW, what would it be? A. There are too many to list! But I would say waterfront dining with Sydney’s famous postcard panorama as a backdrop, sailing on Sydney Harbour, taking in the famous Three Sisters in the Unesco World Heritage Site-listed Blue Mountains, visiting Australia’s oldest wine region the Hunter Valley
and sandboarding on the sand dunes at Stockton Beach near Port Stephens. And not forgetting eating a freshly shucked oyster pulled from the crystal clear waters of the South Coast – New South Wales is one of the world’s most-diverse destinations with dream moments available every second of your stay!
Q. Why is your partnership with Qantas such a good fit? A. We are proud of our ongoing partnership with Qantas, which is Destination NSW’s largest airline partner in the UK market. Sydney is the main base for the airline and our partnership with Qantas drives further visitor growth to the state by showcasing all we have to offer through dedicated trade and consumer marketing activity.
Q. Tell us about the importance of the travel trade to Destination NSW.

A. Agents continue to be the primary source of information and booking channel for UK travellers, so trade marketing and engagement is always an important aspect of our activities. Many potential visitors seek the specialist advice of agents when planning their international travel to NSW so the travel trade relationship is key.
