Future and Freedom: ‘We were profitable subsidiaries’

Story: Freedom ‘in the dark’ after Cook collapse I am devastated and appalled by the ‘compulsory liquidation’ of Future Travel and Freedom Travel Group as a result of the collapse of Thomas Cook. The circumstances surrounding it were taken completely out of our hands. As a very profitable subsidiary, we believed if the worst were to happen, Future and Freedom could be put into ‘administration’, continue to trade and be sold off as a valuable asset. At an emergency board meeting we were advised that that would not be possible as there were a number of substantial ‘guarantees’ lodged against Future and Freedom by Thomas Cook, and that both businesses should be liquidated. These two excellent, profitable businesses, with some exceptional management and staff, could have and should have been saved, and the total chaos that followed avoided. Thank you for everything you have done for the companies over the years. David Elstob, director, Future Travel

Cook: What was strategy?

Story: Thomas Cook: A series of mistakes spanning a decade Anita Gee: At my current work, when I talked about what Cook had been through in the last 10 years, it sounded ludicrous. Buying failing business models, never focusing on one market, constant rebranding, complex websites and multi brands. Who really knows what their strategy and target market ever was? Answers on a postcard.

TUI UK @TUIUK To help our friends at #ThomasCook, TUI Airways will bring home 473 holidaymakers from Tenerife and Turkey this evening. We keep our colleagues at Thomas Cook and its customers in our thoughts.

Clarissa Murphy @cmurphyCRC A picture speaks a thousand words... thank you to this special #ThomasCook cabin crew who took their final flight to bring us home from Paphos to East Midlands. Lovely collection by everyone on the flight too.

Cook staff: Overwhelmed Story: Thomas Cook staff thrown jobs lifeline by travel firms Clare-Louise Edwards: We’ve had amazing support around Peterborough – local businesses offering free taxis to interviews, free CV printing, makeovers, manicures and massages. Everyone is sharing job vacancies. I’m absolutely gobsmacked by the level of support. So grateful for everything that everyone is doing for us.
