here’s no denying that it has been a difficult start to the year for most operators, but as the weather begins
to turn, could green shoots be emerging in the hospitality sector too? Many operators have told us they’ve bro-
ken even at best for January and February – and most of those have done so with an element of relief. The sentiment expressed is that there may not be profit to be had just yet, but at least we’re here to realise it when the time comes. Operators speaking at last week’s
Northern Restaurant & Bar show in Man- chester certainly sounded an air of opti- mism. Staffing is less of a concern than previously, it was agreed, though San Carlo managing director Marcello Diste- fano admits on page 7 that service levels aren’t as consistent as pre-Covid, adding “we’ve having to turn a blind eye more often than not”. Meanwhile, this week Nightcap boss
Sarah Willingham said she believes hos- pitality has “gone through the worst” of the current economic downturn and could look forward to a more positive future (page 8). The glut of closures at the beginning
of the year have slowed after some high- profile casualties, and having weathered the current storm, operators are begin- ning to move ahead with confidence. There is the looming National Living Wage increase, which will put added pressure on busi- nesses across hospi- tality, but even that can’t dampen spir- its in the short term as operators look to brighter days ahead.
