The week in pictures

1-2 Three people were recognised at the National Pubwatch Conference in Sheffield last week for taking action to save customers’ lives. Jean-Luc Julienne, bar team leader at Wetherspoon pub JJ Moons in Wembley, and Stuart Richards, pub manager of a Kingston upon Thames bar, received Bravery & Meritorious Conduct Awards. Pub manager Beth Burns of the Queens hotel in Maltby, South Yorkshire, was given an Award of Merit for her contribution to reducing crime and consolidating community cohesion as chair of Maltby Pubwatch, a voluntary organisation with more than 800 Pubwatch schemes across the UK.

3 Earlier this month a team of chefs representing the Culinary Association of Wales (CAW) served a selection of savoury and sweet canapés at a St David’s Day reception at 10 Downing Street in London. The chefs included five employees from the Celtic Collection – Thomas Beckett, senior sous chef at ICC Wales; Gary Stephens, head chef at Olive Tree; Shekhar Grover, assistant food beverage director; Bryon Burns, senior sous chef at Pad restaurant; and Adam Whittle, cluster head chef at Coldra Court and Ty Newport – as well as apprentices Rosie Koffer and Gabbi Wilson from Chartists 1770 at the Trewythen in Llanidloes. The dishes ranged from whipped Pembrokeshire potato and shepherd’s pie to Welsh cake with strawberry gel and clotted cream.

4-6 Punch Pubs & Co partnered with Only A Pavement Away on 11 March to raise funds through a Sleep Out to Help Out event. Thirty-five employees, including the executive team of Punch and Only A Pavement Away founder and chief executive Greg Mangham slept in the car park and beer garden of the Griffins Head in Nottingham. All participants made it through a rainy night and raised £6,000 for the charity, with donations still coming in.
