The Space Race of the 20th century has given rise to a burgeoning space tourism market, dominated largely by billionaire-backed private companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic. It’s not hard to see the appeal: well-travelled, wealthy individuals who have traversed much of the globe are looking for their next conquest and the vast skies above us offer the perfect opportunity – with huge bragging rights at stake. A range of options is available to those with deep pockets and the right connections. Seats aboard one of Virgin Galactic’s rocket-powered spaceplanes are priced at about $450,000, while a three-day jaunt to the International Space Station with SpaceX could set clients back £55 million. For a taste of space minus the G-force, companies such as Zephalto, Space Perspective and Halo Space promise to propel travellers to a lower altitude in the stratosphere using pressurised ‘balloons’, where they’ll observe the Earth’s curvature in utmost comfort.
