SMART TRACK GETS UP AND RUNNING

the whole structure changed from a bulky crossbar construction to a far more sensible, joint protecting substructure throughout the whole court area: the new “healthy fl oor”. Today’s advanced sports fl oors

feature sophisticated multi-layered construction. The top layer of multi- layer sports fl oors usually comprises 3.5mm thick wood, either maple, oak, or ash. Cross-layering makes them elastic in every direction and no longer sensitive to humidity. The new elasticity of the whole construction means low impact, while the blind fl oor’s structure prevents any breaking through of the upper layer, with the whole layer bedded on rubber pads. Martin Egner, the CRO of ASB GlassFloor was recently quoted as saying his company has “set itself the goal of shaping this development in the long term and positively changing the world of professional indoor sports and the sustainable operation of arenas”. Feldspar is at an advanced stage in its plans to build the world’s fi rst sensor-enabled running track, in what it describes as the fi rst major development of its kind in nearly 60 years, one which will “redefi ne athletic performance and live sports entertainment”. Testing has been taking place on the track which incorporates advanced sensors and new camera

technology to measure real-time movement through footsteps and stride length to assess the likes of acceleration rate and max velocity. CEO Alvina Chen said: “Testing the smart track and receiving such positive feedback from some of the UK’s most talented young athletes has been incredible. Over the past two years, we have tirelessly refi ned our prototypes - working through more than 40 iterations - to develop a functional prototype that has fi nally hit the mark. “This innovation is a true game- changer within sports fl ooring technology, which we believe will spark a revolution in athletics, sports entertainment, and beyond.” Global Track Strategy Director Darren Campbell added: “This milestone proves that Feldspar’s technology can revolutionise how athletes train and compete. We are transforming how sports are consumed.”
