used for the 1896 Games was 500m while the Velodrome d’Anvers Zuremborg in Antwerp used in 1920, and 1952’s Helsinki Velodrome, were
both 400m. In contrast,
London’s 2012 Olympic velodrome, like a recently-built velodrome in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan featured 250m tracks. 579m long. In technical terms, a cycle track generally comprises two straight runs and two curved bends of 180 degrees. The track geometry has to take into account the speeds experienced on the bends and the subsequent eff ect of centrifugal and centripetal forces. These need to be right if riders
are to maintain their riding line and speed. If the bend elements are inclinated properly, the riders – themselves, leaning in when turning into the bend – should get the same experience as if riding on a horizontal

The Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome is widely regarded as an outstanding showcase of its genre. And in many ways it has to be, given that the Olympic events it will host in July next year come on the back of last August’s UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, a spectacular inaugural event
launched with the benefi t of a budget of close to £50 million. Some 200 world champions were chosen from the 2,600 athletes and it was hailed the biggest event of its kind ever. The Paris venue will have been operational for ten years before the 2024 Games, having hosted the likes of the French Track Championships in 2014, the World Championships in 2015 and the European Championships in 2016. Sustainability has become a big part of velodrome construction. ISG, the construction specialists behind the 6,000-seat venue for London’s 2012 Olympics, noted at the time that they saved around 1,000 tonnes of structural steelwork and £1.5 million by redesigning the roof to make it the greenest venue on the Olympic Park. Previous Olympics have been criticised for the environmental damage they caused during stadia construction.
