the industry’s priorities list, despite a range of competing factors. The Future Homes Standard conspicuously ignored embodied carbon, and cost allied to delivery at scale being overwhelming challenges. But how can limiting or at least measuring it upfront in projects – arguably the missing link to achieving true sustainability – be brought into mainstream practice?
The event was sponsored by precast manufacturer Milbank Concrete Products, which has a long-established culture of transparent embodied carbon reporting, given the inherent carbon challenges of concrete, and in a context of a persistent lack of any regulatory requirements. However, we discovered that the comprehensive, data-rich and multi-agency-backed Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard was beginning to get a foothold in the construction sector. It was helping to focus minds onto at least the importance of upfront embodied carbon, but also whole-life costs,
