La nouvelle orthographe – the reformed French orthography
Languages are constantly evolving and French is no exception. Over time, spelling reforms try to fix irregularities in spellings and to make languages easier to learn. The last spelling reform of the French language took place in 1990, but many of the changes were not adopted widely at the time. In 2016, it was recommended that French textbooks on all school subjects use the recommended ‘new’ spelling. However, the ‘old’ spelling is still accepted and both forms are considered correct. The ‘new’ spelling rules have affected about 4% of French words.
In the table below, you can see the traditional spelling and the new spelling of some affected words.
In this textbook, we have mostly used the new spellings, but you may see the old spelling in posters or infographics. Don’t worry about this reform affecting your exam results, as both spellings are considered correct.
Traditional spelling deux cents coût
je céderai aimé-je
un événement des après-midi des matches
renouvellement un week-end aiguë
grelotter
New spelling deux-cents cout*
je cèderai aimè-je
un évènement des après-midis des matchs
renouvèlement un weekend aigüe
greloter
*This particular change involved the dropping of an accent called the circumflex for the letters i and u in most cases. This change was so controversial in France that it even sparked protests on the streets. Despite the spelling reform, the circumflex is still used very widely as the most accepted spelling, therefore we have retained the circumflex in Génial ! 2.
