Oral Genre Communicating

WALT: Using prompts, present an oral report about a topic you are studying.

Spoken Text Type: Questioning and Interviews A Practise the interview below with a partner.

Child: It’s great to meet you, Ger. Thank you for agreeing to answer my questions. Ger: Not at all. It’s my pleasure. Child: Can you tell me where your interest in travelling came from?

Ger: Ever since I was a child, I’ve enjoyed being out and about, exploring my surroundings. I’m not one to sit still for too long. I became interested in National Geographic shows about different places around the globe and I set myself the goal to visit each one.

Child: What is the name of the furthest place you have been to?

Ger: That would have to be Melbourne, Australia. It’s about 17,000 kilometres from Dublin. That’s as the crow flies. Child: Wow, that’s far! What does ‘as the crow flies’ mean? Ger: Oh, sorry, that means in a straight line. Child: How do you go about planning a voyage?

Ger: The first thing I have to do is save up some money. Travelling can be expensive. Then I do some research on the internet. I read as much information about a place as I can. I look at photos and make a list of the sites I would like to see. After this, I go to a travel agent to book my trip. I check the weather for that place and pack the clothes I need. I check my first aid kit, my vaccine card and my passport. I also order currency if it’s a country that is not in Europe.

Child: What was the scariest thing you ever saw on one of your trips?

Ger: I have seen some pretty scary creatures, from snakes and bears to tarantulas and dingos, but the scariest had to be when I was on a boat tour in the fresh waters of South- east Asia and I saw lots of crocodiles surrounding me. I was happy to get off that boat, but I do have some great photos!

Child: Oh my goodness! What is the most exciting thing you have done on a trip?

Ger: I have done lots of thrilling things, like flying in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon, trekking through the Amazon rainforest and travelling through the underground chambers of the Pyramids of Egypt. But the most exciting has to be when I reached the South Pole and flew the Irish flag.

Child: That all sounds amazing. What’s next on your list?

Ger: Nihon ni ikitai. I would like to visit Japan! But before that, I’m off to the NASA Space Center in Houston.

Child: Wow. We learned all about the first moon landing at school recently. Okay, final question: if you could offer me one bit of advice, what would it be? Ger: Get up, get out and stay active!
