Oral Genre Communicating Spoken Text Type: Conversations


WALT: Act out a conversation.


A Imagine that Miss Brooks meets Michael in the supermarket after receiving one of his letters. Act out their conversation.


Miss Brooks: Michael, is that you? (Michael is hiding behind food items.) Michael, why are you hiding?


Michael: Oh hi, Miss Brooks, I didn’t see you there. Wow, you look fantastic! Have you been using a new face cream? Your skin is glowing. You don’t look a day over 50.


Miss Brooks: Michael, I am nowhere near 50. But let’s stop beating around the bush. I received your letters. They were … interesting, to say the least. But I would really like to hear it from the horse’s mouth – exactly why can’t you come to school?


Michael: Well, as you know I have been quite busy working with the secret service on a mission. It’s top secret, so I shouldn’t really talk about it. That’s the reason why I can’t go to school.


Miss Brooks: I can imagine. You mentioned something about an explorer?


Michael: Oh, yes. The explorer was stuck on top of Mount Everest, so Bruno (my dog) and I had to go rescue him. It was a tough climb, but we made it. That’s why I couldn’t go to school.


Miss Brooks: Okay. And then you were captured by pirates, right?


Michael: Yes, we, eh, found a boat home, but pirates attacked us! The Pirate King tied us up, stole the treasure and made us walk the plank. So that’s why I couldn’t go to school.


Miss Brooks: Gosh, Michael, that must have been frightening. So are you able to come back to school now?


Michael: Well, no, you see … NASA needs me. They want me to go on a space mission. I’ll be on the moon for a gazillion years. I told them about the math tests, but they said that the future of the planet has to come first. So that’s why I can’t go to school.


Miss Brooks: I see. Maybe I could have a word with your mom about it. Is she here? Michael: Oh, no, you can’t. She, em … she was abducted by aliens last night and they took


her away in a UFO.


Miss Brooks: Oh my goodness, Michael, that is … oh, hello there. Michael, isn’t that your mom?


Michael: (Crying.) Oh Miss Brooks, the thing is, Nicholas is always at me … and I don’t want to sit next to him … and he takes my markers … and, well, I find math too hard … I don’t understand anything and I don’t want to do a test because I will feel stupid. And that’s … why … I can’t go to school.


Miss Brooks: Oh, Michael, come here. (They hug.) We will sort this out. Don’t worry.
