Demonstration of Atmospheric Pressure Apparatus Aluminium can, water, Bunsen burner, ring clamp and gauze, tongs, large beaker of water
Procedure Add a small amount of water to the can. Heat the can using the Bunsen burner until the water boils for a couple of minutes.
Carefully use the tongs to place the can upside-down into the beaker of water so as to cover the opening of the can.
Observation After a short time the can collapses.
Conclusion
The steam inside the can drives the air out of the can. The steam condenses when it cools, leaving a vacuum. The atmospheric pressure outside the can is greater than pressure inside, causing it to collapse.
