“The pandemic has taken us outside our comfort zone and made us all be more creative,” said Tucker.


He added: “There was a temptation to mothball the business, but our mindset was to keep firing all cylinders, be creative and innovative to foster customer goodwill, so we are in as strong a position as possible after the pandemic is over.”


A similar attitude was evident at Waterside: “It was important to continue investing through thick and thin. You’ve got to keep driving the product forward and not stand still,” said Main.


Like many in the sector, Goodwood Estate now faces the challenge of meeting pent-up demand while not operating at 100% capacity. “It’s a pleasant problem to have,” observed Coggings.

Welkerling summed up the general view in the sector that customers just want things to get back to how they were before the pandemic – so we can all once again relax and enjoy our leisure time. “We’re expecting more business because people will want to go on cruises and do things again that are normal,” he said.


Price echoed the upbeat sentiment: “I have been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years and am feeling as positive as ever.”
