Freedom Day – is the South East ready? As England ends Covid-19 legal

restrictions related to Covid 19, there is a general sense of excitement about the opportunities, tempered however by some uncertainty as to how, and when, the return to workplaces will unfold

Richard Thompson Co-managing director

If lockdown and working from home have brought about a wave of awareness about mental health and wellbeing, and about the importance of corporate culture, going back after the pandemic will bring its own challenges as we embark on a new transition. On top of the pandemic reshaping our work culture, global forces and the heightened focus on diversity and inclusion top the agenda in boardrooms. We highlight these important workplace issues, and you’ll find legal considerations, corporate governance perspectives, as well as leadership insights.

In our Spotlight interviews, we speak with Robert A. Jensen, chairman of Kenyon International Emergency Services, a global expert in crisis management and mass disasters. Kenyon is a global leader in its field, used by over 600 governments and businesses, yet is relatively unknown in its home town of Bracknell.

Look out for our Spotlight interview with Kath Shimmin, appointed in May 2021 first female chair of leading law firm Blake Morgan, in a profession notorious for having few female leaders at the top. She spoke to us about paying it forward and leadership as the art of the possible.

This issue’s features take a look at British manufacturing excellence post-Brexit and how the challenges are spurring innovation; and at the post-lockdown emergence of the hospitality & leisure sector.

We showcase business growth in the region, in the report on our annual Thames Valley SME 100 Growth Index. We’ve unveiled the 2021 edition recently and invite you to meet this year’s cohort of the 100 highest-growth local small and medium businesses. Cumulatively they create almost 8,000 jobs and have an annual turnover of over £1 billion.

We also look at how businesses in the Solent are driving business value through sustainability, which we explored in a Solent 250 webinar recently. Speakers from energy, utilities, transport, retail and finance discussed what sustainability means to them, whether it is a cost or opportunity, and what the future holds.

“We’re all excited about the return of live events, and the need to bring business leaders together in person has never felt so important or indeed desired by the business community. With a safety first attitude, and working closely with our sponsors, we look forward to the return of live events from the autumn,” remarks the magazine’s co-managing director, Richard Thompson.

Business in the South East is geared for growth, and The Business Magazine’s credo is to inform, promote and connect this dynamic community – so every day, you’ll find the region’s business news on businessmag.co.uk.
