enable preventative maintenance to be slotted into routine schedules. Laboratory Analysis when carried out regularly gives the opportunity to incorporate trend analysis which is where significant benefit can be achieved. I am sure most readers will be familiar with incorporating oil condition monitoring into their working practice, especially when it makes all the difference from having to drag failed equipment back off site under difficult conditions or carry out complicated repairs in situ! There are a number of independent laboratories that can be contracted to carry out this analysis, with fast turnaround at competitive rates. Also, in some instances, lubricants suppliers will offer oil condition monitoring as part of a ‘Total Fluid Management’ contract.

Lubricant performance is key to giving companies and operators the service life, performance and peace of mind they rightfully deserve when purchasing what they perceive as quality products. It has been one area of concern to the United Kingdom Lubricants Association and our industry in general, whether all lubricants suppliers are actually delivering the performance they claim or are they are taking certain liberties with exaggerated claims for products that ultimately are not technically competent. These cheap to market products primarily put consumers at risk, but also harm the reputation of our industry and do damage to fair and open competition. To tackle this question the UKLA has launched a subsidiary company – ‘Verification of Lubricant Specifications (UK) LTD’ (VLS for short) a not-for-profit company, which is dedicated to protecting the integrity of lubricating oil performance standards against false or misleading claims. It aims to protect consumers of lubricants from purchasing products that make incorrect claims by providing an independent, objective, credible and trusted means to challenge and verify lubricant specifications and performance claims.

Launched only just a few months ago, we already have an extensive membership of VLS and have just published to the VLS web site one comp-any making incorrect claims. See www.ukla- vls.org.uk I am sure that you will agree with me that we should all rest better knowing that VLS is out there.

It has often been claimed and I am always happy to repeat it, “what our industry sells is not just lubricants but lubrication”!
