Advanced Lubrication of Steel Mill Components:

Pages 6 to 7 and 10 to 11 A Solution for Extreme Conditions Choosing the right grease/lubricant for the hot end of a steel plant is very difficult. Castrol has developed a grease which not only copes with these extreme conditions but also exceeds the expectations of production and maintenance teams.

Test methods for evaluating wear, extreme pressure and friction (in lubrication) Pages 14 to 16

Lubricant testing is undergoing an evolution With anti-wear additives being constantly developed there is a need to test their quality objectively and in a stanardised way. To find out more on these different test methods, please read this very clear and helpful article from Falex.

Challenging Conventional Wisdom: Pages 18 to 20 Is 12-hydroxystearic acid the best fatty acid for making high dropping point lithium greases? Dr. Julian Wilkinson of RS Clare first presented this study which aims to find out whether well- established beliefs amongst grease makers, based largely on research from the middle of the last century, are still true.

Lube-Tech Pages 29 to 31 and 34 to 36

Combination of novel antioxidant system and thermally stable esters for high temperature greases

Equipment running at high temperatures calls for high temperature lubricating greases. NYCO has been investigating the possibility of producing greases capable of withstanding elevated temperatures, on the bases of thermally stable synthetic esters treated with hgh performance antioxidant systems.

Lubrication in Sweden, the same but different! This in-depth report by Graham Gow of Axel Christiernsson presents information on the Swedish lubricants market as well as insight into working and living in such a cold environment. Read how the oil companies have significantly changed their way of working.

Extreme pressures

Another record for LUBE. This October 2014 edition has 64 pages.

This edition focuses on test methods for evaluating wear, extreme pressure and friction as well as the UEIL Congress. Also I am pleased to inform you that we have a UEIL Local Report for this publication, which comes from Sweden.

October’s LUBE Magazine covers extremes and pressures. Extreme conditions found in steel mills starting on page 6, while extreme pressure is being measured on page 14 and extreme low temperatures in Sweden feature on page 56.

Pressure is constantly applied to seek new oil and gas supplies. The report on page 43 interests me greatly. It relates to an investigation which indicates that Scotland could be sitting on larger oil and gas reserves than currently predicted. Exploration licences have been issued for the districts in and around Mull and Orkney as well as surrounding regions, I scuba dive in the seas here, hence my interest. It will be interesting to see what develops.

Have you signed up to receive LUBE in its digital format? There are several benefits in reading LUBE Digital: you will never miss a copy; you can look back at the archived editions; also you can click on hyperlinks to find out more information. On pages 46 and 47 of this edition, there is a two page letter from the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) which was drawn to my attention by Nigel Bottom, UKLA’s Past President. The letter covers aspects of unlawful cartel activities (a cartel is an association of suppliers or manufacturers who purposefully maintain prices at a high level, resulting in competition being restricted). Within this letter there are several hyperlinks which you should find helpful. These hyperlinks can only be accessed in LUBE Digital.

Have you registered yet for the UEIL Annual Congress? It is taking place in Madrid, Spain 22-24 October. You will find the Programme on page 52. Maybe I will see you there. You can contact me by email suzy@ukla.org.uk
