Bulletin VLS010101: Synopus Nova Ultra 5w/30
On 23rd December 2014 the Supervisory Board of VLS (UK) Ltd suspended the membership of one of its members in association with the above case. The case was passed to the UKLA Board of directors who have also taken the decision to suspend the company’s membership of the UKLA and the case file has been passed on to the Trading Standards Office.
While VLS (UK) Ltd has been corresponding with Ferguson & Menzies they have made numerous running changes to their performance claims for their product Synopus Nova Ultra 5W/30 but in all instances have not provided the VLS’s independent Technical Review Panel with satisfactory evidence to support the claims made for the product. Under industry protocols all product claims must
be supported by a comprehensive data pack comprising full results of the test programme, including chemical, physical and engine data which clearly establish the performance and approval claims made for the product. All marketers should at least have access to such a data pack when selling their products so that any dispute over claims can be easily reconciled.
Ferguson & Menzies are now responding that they will withdraw the product from the market and will make all efforts to call back all product from sales outlets.
David Wright, Director General of The United Kingdom Lubricants Association says “We want to ensure we have the highest standards in Europe for lubricant manufacture, blending and marketing,
and we want a ‘level playing’ field for all participants, so that we protect the interests of the consumer and other end users.
“In the launch of the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (UK) Ltd, we have set our course for stronger industry self- regulation by working positively towards more open and transparent competition that benefits all lubricant organisations. By challenging non compliant products in an independent and impartial manner, we can support companies to compete on a more equitable basis in a highly competitive marketplace.”
