Lubricants and Fuels Testing

AVL has been developing engine and transmission systems as well as measurement systems for powertrain solutions for more than 60 years. The team of 6,300 employees acts worldwide in 45 affiliates and generated a turnover of more than 1 Billion€ in 2013.

AVL is an independent engineering services company with no high volume production intentions. Our long-term expertise in the field of powertrain development and excellent relationship to most automotive suppliers enable AVL to be an ideal partner for the development of advanced powertrain propulsion systems.

The experienced team has developed powertrain solutions for OEMs that range from powertrain concept design (including demonstration vehicle builds) through series production. Additionally, internal research projects guarantee a head start in the field of new and advanced technologies. Results are innovative solutions for the end customer.

Recently the ‘Lube Oil Competence Centre’ has been grounded at AVL in order to collect, organise and coordinate all internal information and the long experience about lubricants and fuels in the company.

Issues like fuel economy achieved by different additives and lubricants or alternative fuels are common business at the company.

CO2 reduction/ Fuel economy

In this connection, AVL is able to provide independent, authoritative and reliable results.

A special focus on fuel economy and CO2 reduction is given.

Two examples are provided: the following chart on the left shows the comparison between 3 oils with different additives used in 3 drive cycles, providing the different percentage of fuel economy achieved.

In the graph to the right is shown the improvement of the fuel economy due to reduced friction. In this example for a car of 1350 kg in a NEDC cycle 10% reduction of friction generates an improvement between 1.5 and 2.5% of fuel economy.

AVL skills: • Highly reproducible tests on real engines with consumption measurement accuracy of +/- 0.2% between two tests.

• Reliable and independent data of fuel consumption reduction effects of oil or fuel products.

• Independent and reliable benchmark data of competitors’ products.

• Most modern and accurate measurement equipment worldwide.

• Specifically tuned test beds and trained staff for such unique and special high accuracy measurements.

Benefits: • Knowledge about the impact of oil or fuel products on complex after treatment systems as well as the real world fuel consumption of today’s vehicles.

• Experience of the fuel and CO2 -saving potential of oil and fuel products under specific driving conditions
