Thomas Norrby Joins Nynas as Senior Technical Coordinator Naphthenics
Thomas Norrby has joined Nynas as a Senior Technical Coordinator Naphthenics. He brings more than 16 years of experience in the lubricant industry, including working as R&D manager for Statoil Lubricants for most of that time. In his new role, Thomas will be working as a technical expert, giving support to Nynas’ customers in the areas of industrial lubricants and metalworking fluids, where an increased interest on naphthenic oils have been seen in the last few years.
Thomas is also active as Affiliate Professor at the Department of Machine Design at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, where he coordinates industrial R&D projects.
“I have had a long and fruitful period of scientific work with various universities and clients within applied science, and this is something I can pursue in this position from a slightly different angle,” Thomas said. “My main input will be in lubricant
applications. There is so much going on at Nynas with new technology regarding lubricants and lubricant systems, so it is an attractive place to work and grow.”
Working as part of the Nynas TechDMS- LUB group in Nynäshamn, Sweden, Thomas said that his role will be very solution oriented towards customers.
“My work will involve applied R&D work and offering hands-on advice to clients about improvements”, Thomas said.

Customer Trends 2025 in
the Lubricant Market A Simon-Kucher study commissioned by VSI
The aim of the study is to provide a forecast for the industrial lubricants market in 2025, based on the trends unfolding in the relevant client industries. The study primarily concentrates on industrial lubricants such as hydraulic fluids, metalworking fluids, industrial gear oils, and industrial greases. The study identifies and evaluates cross-industry and industry-specific trends in a global context. Furthermore, the study tests and refines hypotheses regarding these trends and fine-tunes them in over 40 interviews conducted with experts and opinion leaders from the lubricant industry and their client industries.
The impact of the trends on the German lubricant industry was assessed in interviews with experts and opinion leaders from the lubricant industry, its client industries and academia. The results of the interviews were aggregated and analysed by Simon- Kucher for further recommendations.
Prior to Sea-Land, Ted worked as a Consultant and Testing Laboratory Specialist at TribSys LLC for 13 years. He attended Miami University where he earned a B.S. in Chemistry, followed by graduate studies in organic chemistry.

Forecast: The trend towards greater sustainability will reduce the demand for lubricants, especially in Europe. To compensate for the negative volume effect, lubricant manufacturers need to continuously adapt and re-define themselves. This requires for example more active involvement in lubrication product and system innovation, deeper integration in the customers’ value chain and global availability with consistent quality.
This study is the result of a joint project of the Verband Schmierstoff-Industrie e.V. (VSI) and the management consultancy Simon-Kucher & Partners and available for a nominal charge of 259 Euro.
