UKLA President’s Report

It has been a busy few months in the UK Lubricants market, a trend that looks to continue all the way through to Christmas. Despite busy schedules it was a pleasure to see the UKLA Annual Dinner held at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel on the 5th of November, so well attended again this year. The evening gives the members the opportunity to entertain, network and have a bit of fun. A huge thank you on behalf of the UKLA to the members, sponsors and guests for supporting the event once again.

The event also gives the opportunity for the industry to recognise individuals for the role they play within our industry and trade association.

The young employee of the year award this year went to Karolina Lapszewicz of Millers Oils.

A special award of council was given to Mike Swiney of MKR for his services to the industry and the UKLA during his distinguished career. On behalf of the UKLA, I wish Mike a long and happy retirement.

The Presidents award went to John Alton of Morris Lubricants, after many years on the board John decided to step down. John has been a tremendous servant to the UKLA and his presence will be missed. I wish him well for the future.

The dinner also gave the opportunity for members to meet our new Director General, David Wright who started in his role on the 1st of November. I look forward to working with David during my tenure as President and I’m sure he will continue the

good work of Rod Pesch as we look to continue to improve the UKLA offering to members. Rod will continue to work with the UKLA until year end to ensure a smooth transition of the role. Rod has done a fantastic job in his time as DG, from stepping up and taking on the role in our hour of need through to brining VLS into being and working. Thank you Rod!

2015 looks like it is going to be an interesting year. The proliferation of oil specifications continues to bring challenges in terms of keeping up with latest approvals. Securing the plethora of raw materials needed to formally meet approvals is becoming increasingly complex. We are also seeing the landscape of the baseoil market change in Europe with impending closures of some Group I refineries causing uncertainty over future formulations and approval options. At the other end of the baseoil spectrum, shortages in the PAO market are impacting blenders ability to produce top tier products.

These issues bring challenges, taking time and effort to overcome but I am sure the UK market can successfully negotiate these hurdles.

In closing I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous 2015.

UEIL President’s Report Dear Lube Magazine Readers,

In this last report for 2014, I am very happy to inform you that the UEIL Board of Directors counts two new Members: Valentina Serra-Holm (Sweden) and David Hopkinson (United Kingdom). I welcome both of them and I’m sure we will work together with enthusiasm contributing to improve our support to the Members.

It is with sadness that we have accepted the resignation of Sebastian Crawshaw from the Board of Directors, who is currently recovering from health-related issues. We very much appreciate Sebastian’s contribution to the work of the Board of Directors, and the dynamism he always brought to our discussions and I wish him all the best for a quick recovery.

I take this opportunity to thank the Board of Directors and the UEIL Members for trusting me with a second term as President of UEIL. The year of 2015 promises great developments for UEIL’s goals and objectives. As the UEIL public affairs team is strengthened, the policy monitoring and response capacities of UEIL are bound to increase. Topics to follow include taxation of lubricants at the European level, REACH and unfair trade practices. UEIL and its working committees (meeting dates are available! info@ueil.org) will continue to strive for our industry’s voice to be heard.

On congress matters, with 98% of positive feedback related to the parallel sessions, I am happy to conclude that the over 230 participants appreciated this innovation in the congress structure. Adding value to the event as well, over 50% of the participants used the Time2 networking tool provided by the UEIL Congress team - positive & efficient networking was the main result! Regarding the keynote address, Ray Hammond provided the UEIL audience with great insight on what is to come for our industry. About the future, however, I know for certain only that next year UEIL will keep on innovating its congress, this time in sunny Malta – I hope you will be able to join us between 21-23 October 2015!

Have a wonderful holidays’ season, and see you in 2015!

For any questions regarding the above, do not hesitate to contact us at info@ueil.org Sincerely,

Fabio Dalla Giovanna UEIL President
