INSIGHT From Infineum International Limited Read Article > Views on current and future automotive innovations

The automotive industry is currently focused on the reduction of a variety of tailpipe emissions and on improving fuel economy. Insight talks to Dr Andreas Pfeifer, Global Product Development Vice President, at Mahle about how these drivers impact vehicle component developments.

Looking at the drivers for future automotive innovation he explains why in his view industry broad collaboration in the early stages of hardware development is increasingly essential to sustain the required levels of progress in research and development.

JASO specification released

The latest revision of the JASO T 903 specification, which was released in April 2016, is designed to help ensure future motorcycle lubricant formulations continue to deliver sufficient protection to four-stroke machines.

Insight looks at the key drivers for the 2016 revisions, examines the main changes, which include the introduction of new friction plate materials and reference oils. Unfortunately it has not been possible to develop an acceptable gear pitting test in time for inclusion - something Infineum believes is increasingly important as fuel economy becomes more of an interest to motorcycle OEMs.

Marine lubricant additives

The shipping industry is going through some interesting times, with increasingly stringent emissions regulations and the shift to Group II base stocks being two of the key challenges driving change in this complex global market.

Wei Wang, Infineum Global Marine Lubricants Portfolio Manger, talks about the ways additives are being used to deliver the performance required by today’s sophisticated marine engines.

Testing oil oxidation As a major oil degradation mechanism, engine oil oxidation has been incorporated into both OEM and industry lubricant specifications. Currently there are more than a dozen subtly different laboratory oxidation tests in use.

Infineum’s Dave Coultas explains that while these bench oxidation tests define the formulation space they do not improve the oxidation performance of lubricants in real engines. In addition they have the potential to restrict future formulation developments and hinder innovation.
