In this configuration both PFM1 and PFM 2 demonstrated a much greater ability to reduce friction and reduce wear compared to GMO.


As was observed with a hydrogenated DLC–steel ball contact, it is the steel ball which is worn whilst the DLC disk retains its integrity.


Summary


As OEMs look to new surface coating technologies it is essential this is conducted in collaboration with lubricant formulators and additive suppliers to ensure the mega trends of reduced emissions, improved fuel economy and improved equipment durability are achieved; without creating unforeseen issues.


Polymeric friction modifiers have shown the potential to not only reduce friction and minimise wear on orthodox surfaces

Additive selection is surface dependent and it is Croda’s assertion that formulators and OEMs should be prepared to collaborate to ensure that friction modifiers are correctly designed and selected for specific tribological contacts, so that optimum friction and wear benefits be realised.
