Eddy Stempfel retirement from ELGI Board of Directors
Eddy Stempfel
Eduard (Eddy) M. Stempfel is currently the Global Product Manager and Application Specialist for Food Grade Lubricants at FUCHS LUBRITECH GmbH in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Born in 1952 in Bern, Switzerland, he became a chemical engineer in 1974 after an initial apprenticeship as laboratory assistant in the company ASEOL AG in Bern, Switzerland.
Eddy has worked in the lubricants industry (for ASEOL AG and Shell Aseol AG, Shell Lubricants Switzerland, Shell Global Solutions and finally Fuchs Lubritech GmbH) for the last 46 years.
He had several jobs during these years e.g. R&D of lubrication greases, synthetic fluids and automotive and industrial lubricants. In the mid-seventies he was Plant Manager Deputy to the Bern lube oil and grease manufacturing plant.
After re-joining the R&D team he became Head of R&D in 1980 and Head of the R&D and analytical laboratory in 1983.
In early 1984 ASEOL AG had been acquired by Shell Switzerland and subsequently Eddy became Manager of the Department R&D and Analytics, which included for several years the local technical support. After his promotion to Vice Director he was for 20 years in charge of the chemical- technical department and member of the company management. This role included as well the additional responsibility as management representative for quality, health, safety and environment.
Within this time frame the company had been certified as the first Swiss lubricants manufacturer with ISO 9001 and later on ISO 14001.
Due to his strong involvement in food grade lubricants the company became globally the first one certified with the new food grade lubricants standard ISO 21469 in 2008.
Eddy and his R&D team were pretty successful with new products. For example they developed a full range of local lithium-complex greases in the mid-seventies as well as a full range of biodegradable hydraulic fluids, gear oils and greases. This was true technological leadership during this time, locally and internationally.
Beside the mainstream R&D projects, Eddy was then focusing more and more on environmentally acceptable lubricants and lubricants for the food industry. In the early eighties and nineties, these local developments became the still well-known Shell branded product families ‘Shell Naturelle’ and ‘Shell Cassida’.
In 2005 Eddy joined Shell Global Solutions as a Product Application Specialist for Food Grade and for Biodegradable Lubricants and was additionally promoted in 2009 to Global Product Manager for Food Grade Lubricants.
2010 was a decisive year for him as Shell was selling its food grade lubricants business to Fuchs Petrolub SE. After 40 years of service in the same company Eddy decided to leave the company in Bern and to join Fuchs Lubritech GmbH alongside with ‘his’ range of food grade lubricants.
With Fuchs Lubritech he took up an almost similar job as with Shell (Global Product Manager and Application Specialist). He is now home-office based in Switzerland. His current main focus is to support the global team with regards to technology leadership, lubricants
and food safety knowledge, technical and marketing support, formulation know-how and to keep a comprehensive product portfolio up and running.
This is all reflected in the brand name of the respective products. The brand CASSIDA might coincidentally stand for Clever and Sophisticated Solutions In Demanding Applications.
During his career Eddy became very active in industry associations. He was lecturer to the Technical Academy Esslingen and member of NLGI, STLE, SNV (Swiss Association for Standardisation), VSS Lubes (Association of the Swiss Lubricant Industry) and ELGI (European Lubricating Grease Institute).
Eddy is currently still lecturer to several associations and, in co-operation with his crew, he published several papers regarding biodegradable and food grade lubricants (two of them have been awarded).
He joined the ELGI in 1988 just after the institute was founded. During the Dublin Annual General Meeting 1998 he was elected by the membership to the board where he served the institute until 2016.
Eddy is delighted about the achievements and the progress ELGI has made over the last almost three decades – from a good idea of some enthusiastic pioneers to a well-recognised organization – modern and open and having a very good footprint in the grease industry.
For him it was a real pleasure to serve the institute for 18 years.
